O Freedom: A Slave’s Anthem To Liberty

O Freedom: A Slave’s Anthem To Liberty

The human soul is embedded with the desire to be free from any sort of bondage. We want to be free. Sometimes, we go to the extreme of making freedom an excuse to do something bad which is not freedom at all but another form of slavery – the slavery to sin.

Although we haven’t heard of present-day slaves, this practice has been in existence since human civilization began. Certainly, we know about the ancient Hebrews being enslaved by the Egyptians long time ago as recorded in the Old Testament and of course, the slavery crisis in America in the 19th century where it divided almost dissolved the United States of America.

A Song of Freedom

I’m bringing up this topic because I want to make known an African-American ‘song of freedom’ that originated and became popular after the bloody U.S. Civil War of which its main cause was the slavery issue that’s dividing the country then. The song, entitled ‘O Freedom’ is a wonderful song composed and sung by the blacks then and by people of every color until now.

What’s amazing about African-Americans was that they tend to bond together as one community because of their shared experiences of being exploited and enslaved back then in dark chapters of American history. I believe ‘O Freedom’ was written out of these experiences.

So, here’s the lyrics of this wonderful song:

Oh freedom, oh freedom, oh freedom over me
And before I’d be a slave I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free

No more moaning, no more moaning, no more moaning over me
And before I’d be a slave I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free

No more crying, no more crying, no more crying over me
And before I’d be a slave I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
Oh freedom, oh freedom, oh freedom over me
And before I’d be a slave I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free

There’ll be singin’, there’ll be singin’, there’ll be singin’ over me
And before I’d be a slave I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free

There’ll be glory, there’ll be glory, there’ll glory over me
And before I’d be a slave I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free

Oh freedom, oh freedom, oh freedom over me
And before I’d be a slave I’ll be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free

Here’s a youtube video of this song (rendition by Chris Rice):

Please also take time to listen to christian songs about freedom.

In closing, I want to highlight this quote about freedom by Abraham Lincoln:

Freedom is not the right to do what we want, but what we ought. Let us have faith that right makes might and in that faith let us; to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.

God bless you!
